August 27 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team dropped their opening match to St. Bonaventure, three games to none. “Carpinteria had a ton of energy … and played to their potential all the way thought the first set,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. “In the second set, the Seraphs started to fire on all cylinders and never looked back.” Starting outside hitter Malia Shellabarger assisted the Warriors with eight digs and six kills. Libero Emily Montoya added 14 digs and a service ace for Carpinteria. Setter and sophomore Marlene Sanchez provided 19 on the assist ledger for the night.
August 29 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team fell to Orcutt Academy at Warriors Gym, 3-1. “Carpinteria rallied their energy and was able to defeat the Spartans in the fourth set,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Malia Shellabarger helped win the game with 10 kills and three aces. Senior and starting outside Sadie Mead yielded eight kills and 12 digs. “Middle blocker Eva Gropper did an excellent job defending the net, she added four kills, two blocks,” said Garcia. Libero Emily Montoya gained 21 digs and three aces for the Warriors.
September 3 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team swept Providence, 3-1. Outside hitter Sadie Mead put away 10 kills and served four aces. Malia Shellabarger, outside hitter, contributed eight kills and three aces. “Libero Emily Montoya handled business in the back row with 15 digs, two aces,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. The match scores ended at 25-8, 25-12 and 25-16. Carpinteria’s overall record improves to 2-1.
Boys water polo
August 30 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team beat Cate, 16-8. It was the first “Battle of the 192” this year, as the two local schools squared off in the pool. The Warriors jumped out to an early 8-1 lead en route to the victory. The team will participate in the Conejo Classic this weekend at Thousand Oaks High School. They’ll then host Villanova Prep on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 3:15 p.m. at the Carpinteria Pool. The Warriors are now 1-0 on the year, and the Rams are 0-1.
August 31 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in the UCSB Gaucho Invitational on Aug. 31. The Warriors brought home six medals on the day. Some of the top finishers for Carpinteria were Shayla Alvarez who took 35th place with a time of 21:11.78 and twin sister Savannah Alvarez who took 64th in 22:15.92 in the Girls 3-mile. In the Girls 1.5-mile race, Kate Cooney captured 17th place in 10:14.40 and Monse Alpizar took 18th in 10:14.50. Emily Ehlers earned 27th place with a time of 10:43.20.
In the Boys 3-mile, Victor Rinaldi grabbed 86th place with a time of 18:25.70, Luke Nakasone slotted in 88th at 18:28.40 and Esteban Zapata took 146th place in 20:51.80. In the Boys 1.5-mile race, Hugo Alvarado took 13th in 8:20.87, Eduardo Vences captured 28th place in 8:50.33 and Fernando Barahona took 23rd in 8:39.33. The Warriors will take on Cate School in a dual meet on Sept. 12 at Viola Fields beginning at 3:30 p.m.
