On Saturday, June 13, Rincon Fitness will host a live competition between firefighters, as the gym once again opens its doors to the public. They’ll be competing in a “virtual stair climb” which takes the place of the 29th annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb which is normally held on a Seattle skyscraper, but was canceled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. “There’s going to be firefighters across the country as well as the public are all going to be climbing on Six-Thirteen (June 13),” said Carpinteria-Summerland firefighter Kenan Marting of the event that is slated to start at 9 a.m.

Marting will join colleague Johan Nilson, representing Santa Barbara County. The two will hop aboard a pair of stairclimber machines in full gear and air tanks, set to simulate the ascent of the northwest building’s 61 stories. They’ll be accompanied by all the other local firefighters in the region who will also get a chance to utilize the apparatus. So far, they’ve raised $800, but are still accepting donations.
