I support the Surfliner Inn and believe that it will enhance Carpinteria as a charming, beautiful beach community. Many of the arguments against the project don’t make sense to me. Will it block the view? The Surfliner Inn will be a two-story structure. There is already a two-story apartment building directly across the street from its proposed location and several other two-story buildings nearby. I don’t see the problem.
Will it rob us of valuable open space? The fenced-off vacant lot south of the railroad tracks is certainly not one of the beloved charms of Carpinteria. We have a large, beautiful park directly across Linden. Will it detract from the character of Carpinteria? The shops and restaurants along Linden Avenue help make Carpinteria the town we love. They need customers and visitors to thrive. I don’t want Linden to go the way of State Street in Santa Barbara with vacant storefronts everywhere. Supporting Carpinteria’s downtown businesses supports the charm of Carpinteria.
Will it create a parking problem? The plan clearly states that there won’t be a net loss of parking. The Surfliner Inn can be a positive new amenity for our town. Imagine a family arriving by train to spend a car-free weekend enjoying our beach, salt marsh, shops and restaurants. What wonderful memories of Carpinteria that experience will create.
