Sweet swell

The North Pacific Ocean came alive with storm activity in December and has continued with a series of low-pressure systems working westward from Siberia, pushing large swells towards the West Coast of North America. While the sea-state in Northern California has been unruly, the Southern California Bight (the area from Point Conception to the Mexican border) has presented more favorable surfing conditions with large surf moving through smooth waters. Local World Championship Tour surfer Conner Coffin brings poise and expertise to a moment of ocean beauty at Rincon on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 9, with the swell running at 17.7 feet and an interval of 17 seconds from 278 degrees (straight west)—ideal conditions for one of the world’s greatest surf breaks.
