Dr. Shannon Colson raises a new “Summerland Waves” flag at the base of Valencia Street near Summerland Elementary.

Summerland School had a flag-raising ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to celebrate the gift of flags from Summerland Beautiful. A grant from the Manitou Fund made a collaboration possible between the Parents for Summerland and Summerland Beautiful organizations. Three flags were given to the school, two of which now fly on the corner of Lillie Avenue and Valencia Road in Summerland, and the third at Summerland School.

Leslie Person Ryan of Summerland Beautiful spoke at the ceremony and thanked the individuals involved who helped make the event happen. The Summerland Elementary student body was on hand to watch second and third grade teacher Dr. Shannon Colson raise the flag and hear Gordon Morrison play the bagpipes. CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby, CUSD Board Member Jayme Bray and Parents for Summerland President Crescent LoMonaco were also in attendance.
