Over the next several weeks, crews will be finishing up work on southbound Highway 101 in Carpinteria and then shift lanes onto the new median and southbound areas. The work comes as part of the ongoing Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project, undertaken by Caltrans and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.
The current repairs will prepare for the next stage of construction on the mountainside of the freeway. Through April 17, residents can expect alternating closures of southbound and northbound freeway ramps in Carpinteria at night.
On the Northbound Highway 101, stretches from Bailard Avenue to Santa Claus Lane and from North Padaro Lane to Sheffield Drive will be reduced to one lane from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday nights. Additionally, those same stretches will be reduced to one lane Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
On the Southbound Highway 101, stretches from Sheffield Drive to North Padaro Lane and from Santa Claus Lane to Bailard Avenue will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. These same stretches will also be reduced to one lane Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
In both directions, alternating on-and off-ramps will be closed while the nightly construction takes place. These ramps include Carpinteria Avenue, Reynolds Avenue, Linden Avenue, Casitas Pass Road and Bailard Avenue. In both directions, consecutive on- and off-ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time. Drivers are instructed to use the ramp before or after each closure.
In Carpinteria, crews are finishing up work on the southbound side in preparation for shifting lanes. On the northbound side, once traffic is switched, crews will begin breaking up old pavement to prepare for upcoming work on new freeway lanes. On the Santa Monica Road ramps, crews will construct temporary ramp improvements to prepare for the next stage of work where freeway lanes are shifted toward the southbound side.
At Franklin and Santa Monica Creek Bridges, crews are working on finishing the safety barriers. Along Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road, the landscaping contractor is planting and mulching.
In the Summerland segment between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane, crews are working on upcoming median and lane improvements, installing underground storm drains and paving the asphalt base layer for upcoming Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement later this spring. At the Sheffield Drive interchange, they will continue working on the retaining walls, temporary supports and bridge span.
