Carpinteria 1966

Older Carpinteria natives can take a walk down memory lane wandering through local geography pictured here 53 years ago.

Much has changed in Carpinteria Valley since this aerial photo was taken in 1966. The keen eye can locate a number of changes: the old lemon grove on the corner of Linden Avenue and Ogan Road—now a residential neighborhood; the agricultural fields across from St. Joseph Catholic Church—now the Mission Terrace neighborhood; and orchards along Highway 101 near Linden Avenue—now condominiums and office buildings. Glance further south-east along the highway to find the undeveloped tracts that have become the Casitas and Shepard plazas. Follow the highway further to find a few homes among acres and acres of agriculture. Carpinteria may seem to some like the same sleepy beach town of the past, but 53 years has amounted to drastic change.
