Carpinteria-grown Lori Shaw-Kunz designed this year's Avofest poster.

A stunning graphic design by Carpinteria-native Lori Shaw-Kunz has been selected as this year’s California Avocado Festival poster. Shaw-Kunz hoped to capture the essence of her childhood growing up in Carpinteria in her brightly colored design. She was thinking of those “sunny summers” when she would “pick avocados and make and make avocado toast before that was a thing.” For a time, she even lived on an avocado ranch off Foothill Road.

After graduating from Carpinteria High School, Shaw-Kunz established herself in the apparel industry as a textile designer and t-shirt graphics designer. In recent years, she has designed products for Disney, Warner Brothers and Big Dog Sportswear. Now, Shaw-Kunz’ design will don the backs of hundreds to thousands of avocado lovers as they celebrate the valley’s most famous fruit at the 33rd annual Avofest.

The poster’s official unveiling will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m., at the Carpinteria Woman's Club, 1059 Vallecito Road. There will be free live music and food, along with “swag bags” including the 2019 poster, a t-shirt and other goodies. Avofest will be held Oct. 4, 5 and 6 in Carpinteria’s downtown core.
