Sixteen Carpinteria Middle School students completed the last of seven weekly after-school cooking classes on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The two-hour classes were taught over the fall semester by volunteers from the FoodBank of Santa Barbara, and the classes focused on cooking skills, kitchen and food safety, the path food takes from farm to table, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and purchasing affordable, healthy food.  Working in groups of four, the CMS students successfully worked together to prepare, serve and evaluate meals.  Foodbank volunteers from Santa Barbara—Patty Six, Teresa Pietch, Tom Beland and Monica Harmann—spent six- to 8-hours each week planning, teaching and cleaning up the kitchens, and they report that the middle schoolers did an excellent job collaborating in independent groups. The after-school class culminated in pasta dishes that the students rated, and individual-sized pumpkin pies for each student group memb
