Ocean Oaks Day Care, a private childcare facility operating in the Carpinteria foothills since 1986, closed its doors last week due to lease issues. Founder Mary Ann Ertl-Doop and her aides have cared for hundreds of Carpinteria children over the years. Many of the children Ertl-Doop took care of in her early years returned decades later with their own children. The daycare’s abundant outdoor space and educational classroom exposed children to art, early reading, imaginary play and animal care—including interactions with Vincent the tortoise, red-bellied frogs and guinea pigs. The unexpected closure has taken a financial toll on Ertl-Doop, whose friends and family have opened a gofundme.com page that can be accessed through Facebook by searching Ocean Oaks Day Care.
