Carpinteria’s newest family-owned shop, Santa Barbara Hives, is owned by beekeepers Barnaby Draper and Ashley Farrell. The two fell in love with beekeeping years ago and now have 600 hives from Carpinteria to Santa Ynez. The new store, located at 516 Palm Ave., sells handmade honey – in avocado, chaparral, sage and wildflower flavors – all-natural soaps and beeswax and scented soy candles.

Hives also features local cheeses from Santa Barbara Cheese Co. and Step Ladder Creamery, Riviera Bread, jams from Dinkel Brot, Ojai Jelly and Lulu Belle, Casa Hernandez salsa, Pacific Pickle Works and Sideyard Shrubs. In addition, patrons can find handmade jewelry by Chris Ward, Karen Taylor and Santa Beach Treasures and cutting boards by Ben. The store is “bee meets beach,” Draper said.
