The quote, “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said” is attributed to Mark Twain in 1875, and it’s a sentiment that Ryan Reed, owner of Coast Supply Co., counts as the best business advice he’s received. His uncle passed along these words the first time Ryan was asked to cheat in business. “A lot of companies will tell you your order is backordered or there was a problem with your floor and try to charge you more,” Ryan said. “We decided from the beginning that telling the truth—all the time, at all costs—would be the bedrock of how we do business.”

Located in the charming strip of boutiques and restaurants that line Santa Claus Lane, the company has been around since 1945. Ryan Reed and his wife Aimee have owned the business since 2015, offering flooring, windows, kitchens and home goods. When asked about their key to success, Ryan humbly responded that he might not call them successful just yet, but customers love Coast Supply’s other core value: “heavy for its size.” Relating how a friend of his always chooses the best oranges off the tree by picking the ones that are heaviest for their size, Reed said, “That right there struck me, and that’s how we’ve always run our business.” Reed added that he wants his customers “to feel like they got amazing quality at a really great value, like their purchase was ‘heavy for its size.’”

Reed thinks his trade secret might be providing customers one place where they can buy a variety of goods for remodeling, building new or improving their homes. “Usually you have to drive to 10 places to get everything you need. But at Coast Supply, you can get your windows, doors, flooring, kitchen cabinets, countertops, window coverings, area rugs, couches, side tables, pillows and even accent lighting, all in one place,” said Ryan.

Coast currently has locations in Carpinteria and Goleta, and the Goleta store (Calle Real between Patterson and Fairview avenues) will soon have a new showroom. “We’ve done a complete gut on a great building out there, and the rebuild is amazing,” Ryan said. “It will be larger than our Carp store, but will carry the same merchandise and products, and will possibly just have more of them.” The kitchen showroom in Goleta will also be expanded, though the Carpinteria store has a range of home furnishings by Coast Home, as well as Magnolia Home Furniture by Joanna Gaines, custom couches, window coverings of all kinds and area rugs.

The Reeds set themselves apart from other suppliers in their commitment to service. Design consultants comb through details and offer great service at no extra cost, and since Coast Supply employs all of its installers (who also receive retirement benefits) the company offers customers a lifetime warranty on services. Reed gives the same advice to people considering the right time for home improvement projects that he would give to his younger self: “Trust your gut, it’s always right.”
